Through a re-imagination of Aztec poetry and music, poet-dramatist Cindy Williams Gutiérrez and pre-Hispanic instrumentalist Gerardo Calderón engage in a haunting dialogue with “the ones who have gone before.” Cindy performs original poems written in the mythic voices of Aztec poet-kings. Gerardo accompanies with Mesoamerican rhythms and melodies on water drums, turtle shells, seed pods, clay flutes and whistles to transform Cindy’s poems into otherworldly “flower and song” of the ancients. Inspired by New Spain’s iconic “Tenth Muse,” Cindy will perform poems written in the voice of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the 17th-century colonial Mexican poet-nun who was one of the first feminists of the Americas.
